On Thursday, March 8, 14 Adar 5772, we will celebrate Purim!
The preschool, as they do each year, will parade through the school and the neighboring MJCC lobby in the morning before their very own Purim carnival begins. We are sure to see an amazing assortment of Queens, Mordechais, and of course the evil Haman (or two). Of course we see lots of other costumes as well.
In the lower school, assemblies begin Thursday morning where we will be treated to a Purim Shpiel (play) by kitah hey (our 5th graders). Get ready for some very funny costumes and a great cast of characters! Following the play we uaully have a modified Megillah reading. This will be our chance to make lots of noise with our graggers and stamp out Haman’s name. This year, we will be asking you to bring in Pillows for Purim, a program in conjunction with the Oregon Community Warehouse. Please have your child bring in a new pillow to donate following our megillah reading. We will be able to collect the pillows in bins as we enter the room on Monday .
Purim is full of wonderful mitzvot (good deeds, commandments), and one of them is to provide for the needy in our own community. In Thursday's assembly, we will also welcome Rabbi Kenneth Brodkin of Congregation Kesser Israel who will come in as he has done for the past few years to talk with the children about Matanot L’Evyonim (gifts for the needy). We will have a basket in which he can collect money and he will then distribute it anonymously to those in need in the Portland Jewish community. Thank you very much for your generosity.
Later that day, we will have a SPECTACULAR Purim carnival put on by the sensational 6th graders on Thursday afternoon. Students from Kindergarten up will attend the carnival in shifts. There will be dancing and mishloach manot (food baskets to exchange with others), and other fun surprises. A great time will be had by all!
Happy Purim and Be Happy! It’s Adar!
