PJA Student Awards
This is a partial list of honors and awards won by PJA students and graduates
in the past two years.
2004-2005 School Year
Intel Northwest Science Expo, 1st place microbiology, Michael Rutenberg Schoenberg (9th
grade) for work on psoralens.
Intel Northwest Science Expo, 2nd place biochemistry, Mara Rosenberg, Ilyana Rosenberg
and Rivka Horowitz (9th grade) for work on the effect of "chaperones" on yeast development.
Guitarist George Wolff (8th grade) featured soloist on All Classical Radio Station
KBPS 89.9 (April 5, 2005) and featured on Mother's Day program May, 2005.
PJA's Chess Team, consisting of 2nd through 5th graders, placed second in city-wide Chess
for Success Tournament.
PJA graduate Jodi Meyerowitz (11th grade) is one of 26 students in the U.S. honored with a
Bronfman Fellowship for travel and study in Israel.
Math Counts team placed 4th at the regional math competition. The previous year, the
team placed 6th at the regional and 8th in the state; in 2002, the team placed 5th at regional
and 6th state-wide.
PJA Sarah Meyerowitz (9th grade) serves on the Multnomah County Youth Commission.
PJA Middle School Service Learning students led by teacher Connie Leonard were honored by Dove
Lewis Animal Hospital for their work in raising funds and items for the Canine Blood
Donation Program. Students were featured on Channel 2 news for this effort on April 5, 2005.
Painting by PJA graduate Adina Menashe (10th grade) was chosen for the cover of NW Teacher
Magazine.
2003-2004 School Year
First Place locally in microbiology in the Intel Northwest Science Expo and
Discovery Channel Young Scientist finalist and winner of the U.S. Department of
Commerce Youth Technology Award, Michael Rutenberg Schoenberg for work on psoralens.
Michael was one of 40 finalists nationally drawn from 78,000 students who participated in
science fairs across the U.S.
First place locally in microbiology in the Intel Northwest Science Expo and
Discovery Channel Young Scientist finalist and winner of the Discovery Health
Channel Science Camp Award, Blake Gordon-Zwerling for work on psoralens. Blake was one
of 40 finalists nationally drawn from 78,000 students who participated in science fairs across
the U.S.
Eighth graders Jaclyn Katz-Rubinchik and Marissa Snyder placed 2nd in botany at the
Intel Northwest Science Expo for their work on auxins in plants.
Eighth graders Ilyana and Mara Rosenberg and Rikki Horowitz placed 3rd in zoology at the
Intel Northwest Science Expo for their work on frog cloning.
Seven PJA students received honors of distinction in the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented
Youth talent search. Jeremy Druckman, Morriah Kaplan, William Prahl and Na'ama Schweitzer
were all invited to the state awards ceremony. Mara Rosenberg received an honor of distinction
on the math portion of the test.
Fourth grader Sam Glauber took 4th place in the Oregon State Geography Bee for students
in 4th through 8th grade. This continues a winning tradition at PJA; in 1998, Kevin Samuels
won the state contest and 3rd place nationally, when he was an eighth grader.
Fifth grader Jesse Sprague won First Place in Category II of the 2003 Oregon Student Poetry
Contest, sponsored by the Oregon State Poetry Association.
